Some sound advice on how best to enjoy our herbal products:
Unless you are very experienced in pharmacology, it is unwise to experiment with combinations of drugs. Even when using a single drug, thoughts need to be given to all substances, both food and drug, which have been taken recently. In primitive cultures, people abstain from certain substances several days prior to taking a sacramental substance. The substances most universally avoided are, alcohol, coffee, meat, fat, and salt.
Some drugs potentiate others. For example atropine will increase the potency of mescaline, harmine and cannabis. Many of the substances used in this type of product are "MAO inhibitors", and it is most of our notes of caution that relate to them.
The enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitters that are vital to the proper functioning of the brain are known as Monoamine oxidases. They literally oxidise [that is destroy] the monoamines [the neurotransmitters] that are in a continual cycle of production and degradation in the brain.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors inhibit [that is stop the function] the monoamine oxidase enzymes. This in turn leads to the levels of the monoamines [the neurotransmitters] rising in the brain. This is the desired effect these drugs have and this is how they work as antidepressants etc. Note that the most commonly know anti-depressant, Prozac, is not a MAOI and is not then a drug to worry about in regards this discussion.
Monoamine oxidase also oxidises other amines that enter the blood stream and if they are not removed because the monoamine oxidase enzyme is inhibited then their levels rise also. Some amines can, and do, become hazardous to health if their levels are allowed to rise in this way and so in this lies the dangers [the danger are dramatic changes in the blood pressure and so any medical condition associated with the heart, blood pressure or severe conditions of stress are the ones to look out for].
As an important note there are two general classes of inhibitors, as there are for all enzymes, the reversible ones that have a relatively short duration of action and do not interfere with the desired enzyme in a destructive way and those that do. These irreversible ones have a longer duration of action that can extend to weeks and are thus very dangerous if the patient is fool hardy or ignorant. The risks from any of these products are reduced nowadays because of the more effective drugs available and prescribed, and the increased level of education of the recipient from the doctor.
These product don't contain MAOIs but they do contains compounds that are contra indicated with MAOIs [Ma Huang and Calamus]. People will know if they are taking any form of medicinal MAOI as they would of had some very specific recommendations from their GP.
The only other sources of MAOI are from rare botanical sources that are freely available on the black market and these have been marked with an asterisk in the list below.
